3.0 credits (PASS or NO PASS course based on scheduled examination(s) - foundational course in Language and Skills with no face-to-face lectures, but 1 x 1 hour of Q&A tutorial per week). This online course introduces and explores the impact of information technology (IT) in our modern society. It is designed to provide the fundamentals and practices of an effective use of IT in our daily lives. The course introduces core information technology concepts through specific modules of learning design:

• Module 1 introduces the fundamentals of IT, the Internet and the Web, connectivity and mobility, and important issues in computer privacy, security and ethics.
• Module 2 focuses on software for computers and mobile devices, including related aspects of databases and information systems.
• Module 3 explores computer hardware, including mobile devices, as well as computer communication and networking.

• To help students become literate in the fundamental understanding of information technology (IT) associated with the Internet era, including concepts of computer and mobile communications using modern-day examples.
• To raise students' awareness of the impact of information technology on modern living and the wide-spread focus of security issues from various IT applications.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

• Explain the fundamentals of information technology, including the Internet, the Web, connectivity and mobility
• Compare the functionalities of the basic components of computer hardware and software, mobile devices and apps
• Identify security and privacy threats in digital environments
• Analyze the social, legal and ethical impact of computing on society in the information age
